To focus our work on student learning, the department has established specific learning outcomes for each of five core learning areas which we believe we can influence as residence life staff living and working with students.

These areas are:

Multicultural Development and Cultural Competence, Learning and Academic Success , Character Development, Community Responsibility, and Personal Well-Being.

For all learning, we believe that students learn best when they:

  • Believe that they are respected and valued as individuals with distinctive skills, abilities, and knowledge
  • Live in a community that is both physically and emotionally safe
  • Are members of a community that is diverse, open, and accepting
  • Live in a community that encourages exploration, debate, discussion and dissenting views
  • Can study and sleep in their residential environment
  • Are able to process events that are provocative, disrupting, and/or unsettling
  • Can Establish meaningful connections with peers
  • Are actively involved in the shaping of their residential community, which includes balancing individual and community needs
