Academic Success

College students engage in social and academic activities which provide continual rich opportunities for learning.

Learning, broadly considered, is a process by which new information becomes integrated into existing knowledge or through which new knowledge is formed. We believe that the process of learning is one that can be enhanced through reflective questions, thoughtful conversations, exposure to new ideas, and appropriate challenge. We must consider the background and prior experiences of each student as we validate them as learners and guide them toward new understandings.

To that end, residence life staff must be intentional in creating opportunities and engaging students in discussions that encourage habits of reflection, curiosity, and the desire to learn from every experience.

Through participation in their on-campus residential communities, students will be encouraged and supported to expand their awareness, knowledge, and skills in the following areas:
  • Identifying the conditions that best support their ability to study and learn
  • Developing and practicing successful skills and strategies for learning and academic success
  • Making increasingly better choices about how they choose to spend their time
  • Determining their priorities and matching them with their goals
  • Identifying and understanding their individual learning styles and how to use that style to maximize their learning
  • Knowing campus resources available to them to assist in improving their learning skills
  • Recognizing that learning occurs both inside and outside of the formal classroom
  • Analyzing situations from diverse perspectives
  • Identifying, connecting and integrating classroom learning with out-of-class experience
  • Identifying and accomplishing their learning goals
  • Collaborating with others to promote their own and others’ learning
  • Taking advantage of the unique and rich learning opportunities that the campus community provides
  • Matching their skills and interests with their major and career choices
  • Engaging the multiple aspects of one’s self (e.g. psychological, social, emotional, cognitive, etc.) in the learning process
