Mid-year Mentor Application Process

(for 2009-10 positions only)

WHAT IS A MID-YEAR MENTOR POSITION?
Occasionally, Mentor positions that are offered to students during our selection process are vacated for various reasons (i.e., study abroad opportunities, family crisis, etc.) These positions may become available at any point during the 2009-10 academic year.

Candidate files are only reviewed as vacancies become available... see FAQs below.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS
All applicants must have at the time of application:
*Successfully completed 12 MSU credit hours.
*Lived in an MSU residence hall for at least ONE semester (summer excluded).
*At least a 2.75 cumulative MSU grade point average which must be maintained during the period of employment.
*Applicants must submit their last completed grade report.

CONDITIONS FOR MID-YEAR EMPLOYMENT:
· First semester Mentors may NOT student teach or hold internships. After the first semester, experiences which will take the Mentor away from his/her building for significant time blocks are discouraged, and must be approved by the Hall Director and Area Director before they are accepted.
· Mentors MUST be enrolled in classes each semester and be making progress towards a degree.
· If offered a position, you will be expected to attend staff training.
· If hired in the fall, candidates are expected to carry out the position until the end of Spring semester, 2010. Candidates who are not planning on enrolling for spring 2010 will not be considered.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Question: Is there a interview process on a specific date that I need to go through?
Answer: Interviews take place as vacancies occur; there is not a formal process on a certain date. Directors will choose candidates they wish to interview and set up interview dates as needed. If you did go through the assessment center previously, there is a place to indicate this on the application.

Question: How is my application reviewed?
Answer: All files are kept in a "holding" file in the Residence Life Central Office until there is a vacancy. Hall Directors will review application materials throughout the course of the year as vacancies occur in their building. You will be notified directly by the Hall Director if they wish to interview you for their position.

Question: I'm currently going through my first semester at MSU, can I apply?
Answer: Not at this time... however, you will be eligible to apply as soon as you have one semester in a MSU residence hall, and can provide a MSU grade report at the end of the semester.

Question: How long is my application on file for a mid-year position?
Answer: Applications will be considered until mid-February 2010.

Question: If I fill out a mid-year application and I am not picked up for 09-10 positions, am I automatically considered for Fall 2010 positions?
Answer: No! You must go through the new selection process for 2010-11 positions... applications will be available November 9, 2009.

Question: If hired, will my financial aid be affected?
Answer: Yes - Financial Aid does factor in your room and board as compensation. For further Financial Aid questions, please call their office at 517-353-5940 or view their website at http://www.finaid.msu.edu/ and click the Resident Mentor button for more info.

Question: If I'm offered a position, will I be able to get out of my residence hall Housing contract?
Answer: If you are offered a position, Housing will transfer your assignment.
